چکیده

OBJECTIVE To assess the relation between type I collagen degradation and the duration of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS The serum concentrations of cross linked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP) measured earlier in a community based series (90 patients) and a hospital based series (59 patients) were re-evaluated with reference to the duration of RA. RESULTS The serum ICTP showed a positive correlation with the duration of the disease in the hospital based series (r(s)=0.40, p<0.01) but not in the community based one (r(s)=0.18, p=0.10). CONCLUSIONS Type I collagen degradation predominantly reflecting pathological bone destruction does not seem to diminish in longlasting RA.

Increased type I collagen degradation correlates with disease severity in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVES To assess the extent and clinical significance of type I collagen degradation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS Serum samples from 90 consecutive patients with RA from a cross-sectional population based study and 90 age- and sex-matched controls were analysed with the new assay of cross-linked carboxyterminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP). RESULTS Patients with RA had...

Urinary type II collagen helical peptide (HELIX-II) as a new biochemical marker of cartilage degradation in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE Type II collagen, which consists of a large helical domain and telopeptides at each end, is the most abundant protein of cartilage matrix. The aim of this study was to develop a biochemical marker reflecting the degradation of the helical region of type II collagen and to evaluate its clinical performance in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS We...

Rheumatoid arthritis: a synovial disease?

Hypothesis Although rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is believed to be primarily an inflammatory disease of synovium, there is a good possibility that the initiation of the rheumatoid process is triggered by the autoimmune reaction involving type II collagen in the articular cartilage as a consequence of an unknown aetiological agent. Synovitis and other extra-articular features may be induced seconda...

Dupuytren's disease in type I diabetic subjects: investigation of biochemical markers of type III and I collagen.

OBJECTIVE To clarify whether biochemical markers of collagen type III and I metabolism show alterations in type I diabetic subjects with Dupuytren's disease (DD) compared to those without DD. METHODS DD was assessed in a total of 28 type I diabetic subjects, mean age 43.4 +/- 9.5 (SD) and duration of diabetes 25.2 +/- 9.7 years. Concentrations of aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollag...

Glutathione reductase activity correlates with concentration of extracellular matrix degradation products in synovial fluid from patients with joint diseases.

The mechanisms underlying cartilage matrix degradation in joint diseases is not fully understood but reactive oxygen species are implicated as main causative factors. Comparative studies of glutathione reductase (GR) activity in synovial fluid from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), reactive arthritis (ReA) and osteoarthritis (OA) as well as correlations between GR activity and concentrat...
